Bonga

A handy design, water filtration and loooads of smoke. The bong is one of the most recognisable items in the world of cannabis enthusiasts. And yet there are loads of models available, and it’s often hard to choose the best one. At Dr Ziółko, you’ll find many different types of bongs, and we’ll help you choose! What is a water pipe? Bong – how does it work? Which bong should you choose? Water pipe – where to buy? What else is worth knowing?

Bong – what is it?

A bong (also known as a water pipe) is a smoking device, mainly used by cannabis enthusiasts. It usually resembles a vase in appearance. It consists of a water chamber – i.e. a jug – and a mouthpiece for inhalation. Another important component is the bowl with a tube, and in some models, a connector as well. Some bongs are fitted with one or more filtration systems, as well as a compartment for ice (more on this later in the article).

How does a bong work?

The principle behind a bong is very simple. Once the dried herb in the bowl is lit, the smoke travels up to the mouthpiece. On its way, it is filtered by the water in the bowl. The smoke collects in the mouthpiece. When the valve is released or the bowl is removed (depending on the model), all the smoke enters the lungs.

Water pipe – what are the benefits? Is it healthy?

Many people wonder what a water pipe is for and what it actually offers. The very act of filtering the smoke helps to purify and cool it more effectively. So, is a bong healthy? Water filtration significantly reduces (though it does not eliminate, as with vaporisation) the tar content produced during combustion. As a result, the smoke is not only gentler on the lungs but also healthier. For many cannabis enthusiasts, an additional advantage of the bong is the ability to inhale a large amount of smoke in one go, which produces some interesting effects.

Which bong should you choose?

At Dr Ziółko, you’ll find a variety of bongs. They differ not only in size and colour, but also in type, material and filtration. Which one is best? At Dr Ziółko, we’ll help you choose the right bong!

The best bong – glass, silicone, acrylic or metal?

The material is one of the key factors to consider. The most common types are glass, silicone, acrylic and metal bongs. Each has its own pros and cons.

Glass bongs

A glass bong is a classic. It doesn’t alter the taste of the smoke in any way. A glass bong is the easiest to maintain, and you can use not only specialised cleaning products but also, for example, isopropyl alcohol. The cost of a glass bong isn’t exorbitant. The glass construction is comfortable and stable. What’s more, glass bongs are often fitted with water filtration, which further enhances the smoking experience. Bongs can also be combined with bubblers or even a vaporiser. In fact, the only drawback of glass is that it can break.

Silicone bongs

Another option is a bong made of silicone. The biggest advantage of this material, unlike glass, is its significantly greater durability. A silicone bong won’t break. You can use it whilst travelling, on a camping trip or in the woods, and always carry it with you in your pocket. A silicone bong is handy, pleasant to the touch and practical; with proper care, it will last a very long time. What’s more, silicone bongs are usually cheaper than those made of glass and allow for greater freedom in terms of shape. On the other hand, silicone does affect the taste of the herbs being smoked and may alter it slightly.

Acrylic bongs

Another option is an acrylic bong. Acrylic is cheap, lightweight and relatively durable. An acrylic bong will certainly be more resistant to knocks than a glass one. Bear in mind, however, that over time the material may crack or become scratched. An acrylic bong is handy and easy to carry, making it ideal for travelling.

Metal bongs

Metal bongs are becoming increasingly popular. They are by far the most durable option. A stainless steel bong won’t break or scratch; it’s hygienic and easy to clean, and what’s more, it doesn’t affect the taste of the herbs in any way.

What size bong should you choose?

The size of a bong is a very personal choice. A small bong is easier to store and quicker to clean. You can pop it into a bag or rucksack. On the other hand, smaller models rarely have additional filtration and are less stable than larger bongs. It’s worth bearing in mind that they hold and allow you to inhale a smaller amount of smoke at a time, which is also more concentrated and may be harsher.

A larger bong is certainly much more impressive. It’s perfect for get-togethers with friends and long evening sessions with your favourite herbs. Once filled with water, a large bong is stable and comfortable to use. What’s more, you can choose from models with varying degrees of filtration. A larger bong also produces a bigger and milder-tasting cloud of smoke.

Water pipe with or without filtration?

The biggest advantage of a bong is the water filtration of the smoke, which helps to smooth the smoke and reduce the amount of tar. This makes the smoke cloud gentler on the lungs. Many models are fitted with additional filtration for even better results. A bong with filtration is simply a classic water pipe fitted with special (internal or external) components. Their role is to break the smoke down into smaller particles, thereby purifying and filtering it even more thoroughly.

At Dr Ziółko, you’ll find bongs with a variety of filtration systems. Diffusers placed directly in the bowl tube are a common feature. Another option is filtration built in above the bowl. There are various types of this kind of filtration, for example:

  • percolator
  • tree diffuser (mushroom)
  • showerhead
  • spiral diffuser
  • inline
  • steam turbine
  • multi-arm diffuser
  • cylindrical diffuser

There may be a single filter, but models with multiple diffusers are common. The more diffusers there are, the cleaner and smoother the smoke will be.

If you have a bong that lacks a filtration system or if the filter has broken, but you still don’t want to do without it, external filter attachments (known as pre-coolers) are a great solution. These are usually placed in front of the bowl. Some models allow you to add activated charcoal for additional health benefits.

Ice bong – even cooler smoke!

Ice bongs are widely known and popular. This solution has already changed the lives of many a smoker. These types of bongs are fitted with special protrusions in the mouthpiece. You can fill them with ice, making the smoke you inhale even cooler and more pleasant!

Bongs for dry herb, oil or concentrates?

Water pipes can be categorised depending on whether they’re designed for dry herb, oil or concentrates. A bong for dry herb is a classic water pipe, usually fitted with a spacious bowl. A bong for concentrates is constructed slightly differently. It is usually smaller, with a male joint and a special bowl designed for oil.

A whole new dimension to cannabis: the vaporiser bong!

Vaping enthusiasts don’t have to give up their bong at all! All you need is a special adapter that allows you to connect your device to a bong. It’s the perfect solution for cannabis users who, for health reasons, cannot smoke, or for those who want to look after their health and completely eliminate tar. Combining a bong with a vaporiser lets you experiment and enjoy the full potency of your favourite herbs.

Water pipes – are they legal?

If you’re asking yourself, “Is a bong legal?”, we’re here to put your mind at ease. Absolutely! Neither the possession nor the purchase of a bong is regulated by law in any way.

Water pipes – where can you buy them?

At Dr Ziółko, you’ll find the widest selection of bongs. We offer a range of brands, sizes and models, so you’re sure to find something to suit you!
